General practitioner Isa Houwink, M.D., Ph.D.
registered as a general practitioner since 2008 after a number of years of experience working as a physician-assistant in gynecology (VUmc and OLVG in Amsterdam, Atrium MC in Heerlen). In 2013, I obtained my Ph.D. in education about genetics for primary care, from which the website huisartsengenetica.nl originated, among other things. The combination of working as a general practitioner and doing research continues to attract me because I have noticed that one inspires the other. It is about providing tailor-made care for the individual patient; genetics can also play a major role in this respect at the general practice!
In addition to my work as a general practitioner on Thursdays and Fridays, I work a few days a week as a researcher on a European project to teach genetics to healthcare providers (primarycaregenetics.org) and on genetics in cardiovascular diseases. I also teach medical students, general practitioners and medical specialists (in training), and I am active within the Pharmacogenetics Working Group.
